Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul

A couple of months ago, my husband had the opportunity to attend the Wild at Heart Men’s Retreat. You may recognize the title of this best selling book by John Eldredge. My husband was blown away by this incredible experience he had meeting with God and other men. He has encouraged me to read the book stating that I will understand our two sons and him better!

When Thomas Nelson Publishing provided the opportunity for me to read the “female version” of this book, I could not respond quick enough. Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul was first available in 2005 but has just been revised and expanded. I had never read the original edition so I was excited to dive into the new one!

If I had to sum up the entire book in one sentence it would be this:

As a child of God, I am captivating.

Sounds pretty simple but it will seriously knock your socks off when you dive deep into the words and realize it as truth. God finds us as women beautiful. Even as I write this, the enemy put words of doubt in my head. But throughout the book, John and his wife Stasi Eldredge show through the scriptures why this is absolutely true.

I’ll be honest (since most of you have never seen me). I am not gorgeous. I have a head of hair that would have been great in the 80’s; not so much now. I am never going to have a beautiful figure (could be the 3 babies in 4 years and 11 months). Since I will never turn heads, I try for the “cute” look (you know the Meg Ryan thing) but my tight wallet and strong dislike of shopping kind of kill this. But in reading this book, I came to grips with the fact that God sees me as His beautiful creation. I am a Daughter of the King and who am I to doubt God’s creation! Can I get an Amen on that one?

In the next few days and weeks, I am going to be sharing key points from this book that I think all women need to hear. Captivating is chalked full of truths that the enemy doesn’t want us to hear. This is why you need to read this book! I believe it will change your life as a woman.

I do want to add that there are specific references to abuse situations. I have never been in an abusive situation or relationship (Praise God!) but if you have, I would encourage you even more to read this book. This book also comes with a Study Guide to be done with a group of women or by yourself.
