My Mom found a Shining Star magazine from 1993. Although 1993 doesn’t sound that long ago to me… when I started doing the math, I realized that this magazine is 17 years old! Oh my! Anyway, this magazine was filled with ideas that I have added to the curriculum as well as some that I will post on this blog.
If you drink frozen juice, you may have already found a use for the lids. If not, here a few from Shining Star…
Coasters – Paint the lids with acrylic paint and design.
Magnets – Cross stitch a design on counted cloth and wrap the excess material around a piece of batting glued to the lid. Glue the material to the back and attach magnetic tape. -or- Cut out a design from an old card that will fit inside the lid. Glue in place and border with lace, braid, or braided yarn.
Lamb Posture Craft – Glue a circle of green felt or paper inside the lid. Glue two cotton balls or white pompoms to one side to form sheep. (Have one ball a little higher and to the side of the other. The sheep will appear to be looking back at you.) Glue eyes and ears to pompoms. Glue and write “The Lord is My Shepherd” on the lid.
Picture Frame – Glue pictures inside the lids and edge with lace.
Giant Checker Game – Paint and cover lids with batting and fabric in two colors. Make a board from poster board.
Doll Table – Glue lid on top of a large thread spool. Cover with material for tablecloth.
Memory Verse Frisbee – Make a colorful game board from poster board. It should look like a dart board with various sized circles inside one another. Print Bible verse references or questions on slips of paper. Color code the papers to match the different sections of the game board. To make frisbees, paint lids with acrylic paints in different colors. Have each child toss a frisbee on the game board. Choose a Bible verse or question to match the color of the section the child’s frisbee lands on. To get a point, the child must say the Bible verse or answer the question.
Car Races – Glue pictures of a car from magazine inside lids or glue small micro car on lid. Have races by sliding lids across the floor.
Paper Doll Stands – Glue a 1″ styrofoam square in lid and score to thickness that will hold up the doll.
Candlebase – Glue candle in center of lid. Add greenery and flowers around.
Glue Holder – Dab a bit of glue on a lid and give cotton swabs to spread it with.
Momma C’s Ideas:
Ornaments – Cut cards or pictures to fit inside the lid. Glue and add beads, lace, yarn around for decoration. Glue a small amount of yarn or the tab of a soda can on the back to hang the ornament on a tree.
Memory Game – Center stickers on the lid – Matching stickers, uppercase and lowercase letter match, a number and dots, a sticker of an item that begins with a certain letter, colors, shapes, etc.
Flashcards – By placing stickers on the lid, use as flashcards. Place numbers or letters in order.
Internet Ideas:
Tap Dance – Take a piece of wide elastic and attach it to the lids and let kids use them as taps on their shoes.
