Ruby’s School Walk was published at a perfect time – just in time for school to start. While walking to school, Ruby is faced with various fears. Her mom helps her combat these fears through gentle words, speaking on her level, and encouragement.
Momma C’s Thoughts: We enjoyed reading this book. The message is positive if you pull it out and explain it to the child. My kiddos got a little confused about how something could be only in Ruby’s imagination if it was drawn on the page. We discussed what Ruby thought she saw and what was real – even though both were illustrated sometimes.
This book talks about witches, a haunted house, ghost, beasts, to name a few. While presented strictly as innocence in a child’s mind, these are not things that we generally discuss, read, or view in our home. Also the book says several times, “But she’s [Mommy] wrong.” This added to our talk that although Ruby thought her mom was wrong, she was indeed correct.
Overall a cute book with a positive message about imagination and reality. Just a few nit-picky points that I wanted to bring out.
