A Parenting Problem or a Child Problem

10/27/2010 by Heidi

During one of my last sleepless, prego nights, an aha moment came to me.

Is this current problem a parenting problem or a child problem?

My question stemmed from a couple of issues that we are facing at our home.  Some of them deal with all of our children while others are child specific.  During my time of contemplation, I decided that the issues that we are dealing with that are specific to each child are issues coming from that child’s heart.  But the all-children issues probably stem from poor parenting.

Three examples:
1 – Sweet Pea does not like to work.  While Bubs will tell you that he “hates this” chore.  Sweet Pea quietly tries to sneak off, get out of, or let her brother do all of the work.  This is a heart issue that we are working on.

2 – During the last visit from the grandparents, Daddy and I noticed a huge problem among our children.  As soon as the “amen” is said, our children immediately start into “May, I please have…?”.  While very polite it shows lack of patience and respect.  The entire meal consisted of them wanting more food, drink, or something!  It took a visit from family to show us an issue of poor parenting.  So, the very next meal began with expectations on waiting and asking for additional items.

3 – Growing up in my family, you weren’t passionate unless your voice was raised.  This has lead to our children following my very poor example.  Every time one of the kids yell at their sibling, I am reminded of my poor example.  Parenting Issue 101!

Think of the problem that you are dealing with in your home…
Child specific – a heart issue?
Family issue that needs dealt with from a parenting side?
