The Autism Sisterhood is an easy-to-read, go-to manual for parents who have a child diagnosed with autism. A quick read yet packed full of little tips, this book is written by a mom who has been there.
Michele C. Brooke’s goal in the 48 pages was to create a resource that parents could quickly read to help them come along side their child. The tips aid the parent in finding therapist and tools to open up the world of autism. Consider yourself Michele’s best friend. In this book, she is simply telling you things that she would tell her best friend about raising a child with autism.
I love how the book doesn’t just tell you to find “blank” but it gives you specific examples with websites included. There are several items that I am going to look up myself. Since many autistic children struggle with communication, Michele has included many ideas to help keep the communication going even if it is just one sided.
On caution, I felt like the author leads you to think that you must go out and purchase a bunch of new things. I know this was not her intention and I want to encourage parents to look around your home first. So many useful items are found in your home. Maybe a little tweaking is needed but do not feel the pressure to buy a bunch of new things.
Use this book as a starting point – from one sister to another. Then find a support group to help you as a parent, which in turn will help your child.
Even if your child doesn’t have autism, there are several helpful hints to use with a child diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder. This book would also be a great one to give to a friend who may need it.
Update: I have been giving the opportunity to review several of the items suggested in this book. The reviews will be posted in the next couple of weeks.
