For the last 10 years, I have been following the lives of the Baxter family and their friends the Flanigan’s. Sometimes I feel these families are part of my life. Just families down the road; families that attend our church. (If I am talking your language, you know exactly what I am talking about.)
The fifth series in the Baxter series, Leaving is the first of the Bailey Flanigan series by Karen Kingsbury. At 21, Bailey is ready to leave the nest and begin life on her own. But, what the future holds is very puzzling. Since this is such a popular series, I do not have to jeopardize spoiling any of the plot. Thus I will leave it at that.
Momma C’s Thoughts:
For me, the previous book in the Baxter series – Take Four (Above the Line Series #4) – got a little…long. It seemed the story was being strung out a little past its prime. I was afraid Leaving would be the same way. Although it started out more of the same, I was relieve to see the storyline pick up. So much so that I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series – Learning – which comes out June 21st.
Just so you don’t think that the book is perfect… Sometimes while reading this series I get frustrated because the daily life of the characters is perfect. It isn’t that bad things don’t happen. It is that there are no fights. The kids obey and are supportive of their siblings. Everyone is lovey-dovey. My life isn’t like that. While talking to my husband about this, he reminded me that I wouldn’t want to read a book that was just like life. That would be boring and depressing. True.
You don’t have to worry about this series keeping your interest. As a fast read, it is easy to slip away from the mountain of dishes and frustrations of mommyhood to another world. Even though the author does a wonderful job explaining the past in each book, I encourage you to not start with this book. Go back to the beginning with Redemption and get to know the characters. Understand their stories and the valleys that God has brought them through. I promise that you will find one character to relate to.
You won’t be sorry!
Thank you to Zondervan for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
