Well, you have seen my conviction for memorizing scripture. While at my parents’ this last weekend, my mom gave me a book about why we should memorize God’s Word and what Bible verses to first learn. God has amazing timing.
As we traveled back home, I started reading through 100 Bible Verses Everyone Should Know by Heart by Robert J. Morgan. The first few chapters cover the “why” with the following detailing “what.” I appreciated this quote from the author.
Scripture memory is our most powerful tool in changing our habits or thoughts, and the internalized truths of God’s Word keeping us mentally healthy. It’s the greatest secret I know to personally resiliency. It molds our thoughts, and our thoughts shape our lives; for as we think in our hearts, so we are.
He goes on to promise that through memorizing scripture you will have “clearer thoughts, steadier nerves, healthier emotions, purer habits, happier homes, greater respect, and eternal optimism. Isn’t that worth at least five minutes a day?” The Word of God is powerful!
Morgan offers ten suggestions to help memorize verses. First decide to memorize one. Just one. Next, work on it every day. Post the verse where you look – computer screen, smartphone, mirror, refrigerator. Repeat your verse over and over again. Remember to read the verse in context of the scripture and study it. This includes writing it out and checking other translations. Don’t forget to learn the reference with the verse. Review, review, review. Use mnemonic devices or mental association to help you remember the verse or reference. Lastly, use your verse. Preach them to yourself, tell others, and turn them into prayers (See the Praying Scriptures for Your Children).
From there Morgan divides the 100 Scriptures into sections – The Beginnings, Romans Road, Listening, Assurance, Praise, Promises, Holiness, Fullness, Joy, Faith, Sent, Psalms 23, and Alpha and Omega. Each verse is explained and background is giving to aid in memory and understand.
If you have never memorized scripture, this book would be a great place to start.
