When God Created My Toes (Dandilion Rhymes) is the latest in my children’s book reviews and the second review of a Dandi Daley Mackall book. Previously I reviewed the book, God Loves Me More Than That.
I love the cover illustration of beautiful feet and was drawn in by the title. The first pages gathered giggled from my kiddos while we read the rhyming questions.
But the book took a sad turn almost halfway through when my children stated, “That girl is making a really bad choice.” Although the words continue with the thoughtful questions about God creating us, the illustrations show a little girl painting the walls and furniture and then giggling while her mom looks on frustrated. The words question how God “created my hands?”. A few pages later, the same little girl sneaks up behind her dad and scares him sending coffee flying across the chair while questioning how God “created my eyes?”. Thankfully the book ends with the family having a tea party.
The illustrator, David Hohn, is very talented. The illustrations are amazingly done. Sadly what the illustrations depict are a little girl being very naughty. Not something I want to have glorified before my children.
The questions brought up by the author are very legit but no answers are ever given. Even the ending sentence of the book is a question, “Was he pleased as he could be when God created me?” The book held a wonderful opportunity to reassure children that they were created “perfectly, intricately, and uniquely.” Unfortunately, an opportunity was lost by not answering the questions.
Thank you to Waterbrook Press for allowing me to review this book.
