Christmas Traditions: Macaroni Christmas Crafts

12/09/2011 by Heidi

You could spend all of December doing crafts found on the internet for Christmas.  ABCJesusLovesMe.com has several suggestions as well.

Macaroni crafts may be one of my favorites.  Why, you may ask?  Because unlike many crafts, this is one that my young kiddos can do mostly on their own.

Ingredients:
Macaroni
Vinegar
Food Coloring
Glue
Paper

Directions:
Place a handful of macaroni in a zip top bag.  Add a pinch of vinegar to the sack and a few drops of food coloring.  Zip close the bag making sure the air is all out and mix.  Once the dropping is filled with the vinegar, a preschooler should be able to do much of this on their own, with supervision of course.

Open up the bag and allow the macaroni to dry.  Or lay the macaroni on a piece of cardboard to dry.  We used a hairdryer to speed up the process.  My kids loved this.  Be sure to stir to make sure you cover all of the macaroni.

Once the macaroni is dry, cover the paper with glue and place the macaroni on the glue.  Allow to dry.

Here is a Christmas Tree too!  Notice that the colors are not as vivid because not as much food coloring was added.

This activity can be used for any coloring sheet or printout.  Definitely a favorite of my kiddos.

Use this same macaroni to make macaroni necklaces.  What child doesn’t love to see grandma wearing a necklace that he/she made for her?  (Sorry grandmas!)  Simply thread a string through the holes.  Large macaroni makes this task much easier.

Whatever the Christmas crafts, focus on the time together and the part of the Christmas story that the craft speaks of.
