Hugs and Kisses, God: From Kids Around The World is new Lift-the-Flap book by Allia Zobel Nolan. Each page includes a folded portion that when opened reveals additional sentences and pictures.
The book begins…
We’re all children of this great big world – from Maine to Timbuktu
How do we show God we love Him? Let’s make a list of things we do.
The book continues with children giving God love (hugs and kisses) by praying, thanking God, being nice, reading the Bible, in the little things in life, and by making good choices.
Heidi’s Thoughts:
The concept of this book is rock solid: There are many ways to show God love.
Where the concept got a little rocky is when the author talked about sending God love, hugs and kisses. While I understood the point, it flew over the understanding of our kiddos. Little Man could not understand how you give God love, a hug, or a kiss.
Here is an example
On the days that I feel lonely, I take walks and tell God news.
Then I sent him love and kisses, and that chases all my blues.
Great idea. Unfortunately just a little too abstract for the preschool audience.
The illustrations were cute. I especially liked the example of “being nice.” Although I had to help with the explanations, the drawings let so some good conversation. The title states that the book is about “Kids Around the World.” While the illustrations do show children of different nationalities, the pictures depicted typical suburban-American settings. I would have liked to see settings from around the world, if that was truly the goal of the book.
