For the past few weeks, at 5:30 in the morning Kay Arthur and I have been meeting with the Lord. This is after I have rubbed the sleepy dirt away and done a few things to wake myself up a little bit. Then I turn on the lights and begin my quiet time with the Lord.
In reality, Kay isn’t physically with me. But as I use her devotionals to guide my time, I appreciate the personal approach that she uses in her writing to make me feel like she is sitting there with a Bible mentoring me through the Scriptures. So far I have used the Lord, Only You Can Change Me: A Devotional Study on Growing in Character from the Beatitudes study and am currently going through the Lord, I Need Grace to Make It Today: A Devotional Study on God’s Power for Daily Living study.
I was asked to review a copy of When the Hurt Runs Deep: Healing and Hope for Life’s Desperate Moments also by Kay Arthur. I was intrigued because even after twelve years of grief, the hurt runs deep. Could God have some things to teach me in this book?
While looking over this book, I found many promises from God. Great reminders of God’s love for me, His good purpose for my life, and how much hope I have in Him. Kay Arthur uses many stories of those who have walked a season of life filled with hurt. Stories of divorce, abuse, suicide to name a few.
Unlike the studies that I mentioned above, this book is more of a self-help book with group discussion questions added in the last one-third of the book. A Prayer and Mediation Journal concludes the book.
Whether we like it or not, life contains Interrupted Expectations. As it has been said, you are either going into one, going through one, or just exiting a storm. It is good to know that there are books available like this one to help turn our focus to our Strength and Savior.
