I’m taking a break from D2D to write a blog on parenting. More to ponder and pray about while cleaning!
Do you ever feel like you want to start over? Clean the slate and start anew? Erase the wrong.
This is true of so many areas of my life. I dream about shaking the wrong away as I would in a bad Etch-a-Sketch drawing.
How about in parenting? Have you realized that there is an area of parenting that you have really messed? Do you feel like the damage is done?
That it is too late?
I read this quote from Parenting With Love And Logic that was like cool water on a hot summer day.
It usually takes one month of love-and-logic parenting to undo one year of tacky parenting. So, if your child is twelve years old, give yourself twelve months to help him or her learn responsible thinking…. It’s never too late….
Does that encourage you? It sure did me!
Since many of you who read this blog have preschoolers, you only have two or three months of work ahead of you!
Have a child who doesn’t sleep through the night? Have a child who doesn’t sit in a chair for meal time? Have a child who doesn’t pick up toys?
Do the math. You are probably closer than you thought to the choice behavior!
From my experience of working with kids and our own blessings, I believe that the time needed is even less with toddlers and preschool kiddos. Being so young, many habits can be broken in two weeks instead of needing a whole month.
Of course, there are those who break all the rules and it may take longer. But, a few rough weeks are tons better than many rough months.
Hang in there mommas! Be encouraged. Create a plan through prayer and counsel. Stick to it and allow you and your child to reap the rewards.
