Sometimes I wonder, “What did I do to deserve this?” or “Why did God do this to me?” In my own little pity party, I get frustrated with my failed expectations.
I mean, in my mind I have the picture of a perfect Christian family. I imagine children who laugh and play together. I think about a family who sits at the dinner table talking about their day. I see everyone playing in the evenings, making memories, and creating lasting bonds.
Then reality steps in.
The problem is that I never foresaw the obstacles we would face – all beginning with Bubs month-long-stay at the children’s hospital for open heart surgery. No one explained the multiple behavior, social, learning, and processing issues that Bubs would have. Then four years later came Little Man with all of his impulsive control problems.
Lately, I have been questioning, “Is this really what I signed up for?”.
A while back I heard this wonderful explanation (I am sorry that I don’t remember where!) and hope that you will be encourage by it.
A daughter came into the kitchen to tell her Mother how everything was going wrong. She was failing algebra, her boyfriend broke up with her, and her best friend was moving away. Meanwhile, her Mother was baking a cake and asked her daughter if she would like a slice, to which the daughter said, “Absolutely Mom, I love your delicious cakes.”
“Here, have some cooking oil,” her Mother offered. “Yuck,” said her daughter.
“How about a couple raw eggs?” “Gross, Mom!” replied the daughter.
“Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?”
“Mom, seriously!” declared the frustrated daughter.
To which the mother replied, “Yes, all those things seem bad on their own. But when they are combined in the perfect way, the ingredients make a wonderfully delicious cake!“
God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such painful and difficult times. But God knows that when He combines each experience, they create a beautiful creation! We just have to trust that the Chef knows what He is doing!
