Each morning in December, I wake up to a beautifully lit Christmas tree. My husband turns on all the lights making a glow that is breath taking. Let me assure that it is not my decor that is spectacular because I am far cry from Martha Stewart. It is the individual lights that put a smile upon my face. And if it wasn’t culturally frowned upon, I would leave my Christmas tree up all twelve months just to enjoy the lights.
Today, with the Christmas lights aglow around me, I began pondering my morning devo Scripture from the GoodMorning Girls Advent study.
Isaiah 60:19-20
19 The sun will no more be your light by day,
nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
20 Your sun will never set again,
and your moon will wane no more;
the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your days of sorrow will end.
Immediately, I thought of the Point of Grace song lyrics based upon Revelations 21:4, “there will be no more pain, no more sorrow, no more waiting for illusive tomorrows.” Oh what a wonderful day that will be!
But then I began wondering why this scripture would be part of an Advent study? And as I have learned to expect, the Holy Spirit pointed it out.
Remember how at the beginning of this post I shared my affection for Christmas lights? The Holy Spirit reminded me that the soul reason for lights is darkness. If there was no darkness, there would be no need of light.
In the Bible, darkness is the epitome of sin. We live in a sin-filled and sin-desiring world. We need the Light. Jesus is our light and it is only through His sacrifice that our days of sorrow will end.
So when you see a Christmas light display, remember that because Jesus came to earth as a baby, died, was buried, and rose again so that one day there will be no more darkness. The Lord will be our everlasting light.
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
So the next time you see a fabulous display of lights, remember that darkness is around us requiring the light. But the “Lord will be [our] everlasting light, and [our] days of sorry will end.”
