At age four, he wants what he wants and he is willing to fight for it. He wants to make sure that throwing himself on the floor won’t give him the desires of his heart. It’s an experiment that isn’t working for him but he is trying…just to make sure the boundaries are firm.
But Peanut isn’t alone. All of our kiddos have bucked {and are currently bucking} the system in one way or another.
About seven years ago, Bubs learned a catchy phrase at church. His teachers must have said it a lot because we heard it frequently, especially around meal time.
You get what you get, and you don’t throw a fit.
Sweet Pea even caught on repeating the rhyming phrase throughout the day. Fast forward seven years and you will continue to hear the kids repeat it reminding Peanut that life doesn’t always give him what he wants. And if truth be known, I bet our grandchildren will hear the same ten words repeated to them.
Why do I tell you this?
Kids are listening. You have an impact on the little ones around you. You have a huge influence on that kiddo in your home or in your classroom. You.
I find myself getting discouraged in the mundane of training, cleaning, and cooking. Laundry, mopping, and messes. Feeling like I am making absolutely, positively no progress with character education and discipline. Thinking that I am failing at “impressing” Jesus on the blessings in my life.
Then out of nowhere I will hear one tell the other “You get what you get, and you don’t throw a fit.” While they may not apply it to themselves, at least they are beginning to recognize the concept!
So, I encourage you to keep on keeping on. When you think something isn’t working, you are probably close to a break through!
Proverbs 22:6 – Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

We say this around our house as well! I first heard it when I taught preschool. I'm not sure if I first used it with my kids or if they first heard it from teachers. Either way, they know it and it works!
Just what this momma needed to hear….keep on keeping on! It is so easy to get discouraged and feel like you are failing as a mom.
My kids also know that phrase, and it is said often at our house! I believe they learned it in preschool.
