I was skeptical, as many Christian films lack quality. The acting is typically subpar, and the storyline begs for depth. After a pre-release viewing, it was refreshing to discover independent filmmakers successfully sharing hope. So much so that if you’re looking for a solid, wholesome movie, I encourage you to head to the theaters this week and give Someone Like You a shot.
Someone Like You Review
Based on the popular novel by #1 NY Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury, Someone Like You is a fusion of Christian film meets Nicholas Sparks, minus the promiscuity. You’ll experience a bit of the “perfect” family, heart-breaking tragedy, and a beautiful love story rolled into this 2-hour movie.
If you enjoy behind-the-scenes details, Karen Kingsbury kept it all in the family. Filmed in just 24 or 25 days1, one son directed the movie, while another auditioned and gained a prominent role in the film. You will also see multiple family members listed in the credits. Another fun fact…Michael W. Smith’s son, Tyler, wrote and conducted the movie’s score, which contains some moving movements. Filmed in Nashville, Franklin, and neighboring Alabama, the scenery is gorgeous. The arial shots of the autumn trees are breathtaking. And for a Hallmark-like movie, the acting is very well done. Jake Allyn’s portrayal of Dawson Gage was unexpectedly first-class.
The ribbon of hope, God’s love, and redemption is woven throughout the movie. Personally, I felt a few scenes missed the mark on driving home the Gospel message. But maybe this ambiguity will cause more to see the movie and open up doors to conversations afterwards. Who can you take with you?
This movie is only in theaters for a short time beginning tomorrow, April 2. You can purchase tickets here.
