I love the opportunity I have to give sneak-peaks into new Christian books, music, and movies available to strengthen your understanding of the Bible and God’s love for you!
Author Liz Curtis Higgs is the latest in my list of reviews. You will probably recognize this popular author from her best-selling story Thorn in My Heart. My Women’s Ministry Group did a book study of this trilogy a few years back. Ms. Higgs did a amazing job of placing the Biblical story of Leah, Rachel, and Jacob in the 1700’s.
When I was asked to review her newest book Here Burns My Candle: A Novel about Ruth and Naomi – I didn’t hesitate. Once again a Scottish historical novel that introduces you to characters who loosing follow Ruth 1: 1-18. Obviously with 454 pages in this book, there is a lot of embellishment.
As I have stated before, I love books and Adventure in Odyssey Series that bring the Bible to life. You see the characters as people with thoughts and feelings instead of simply names on a page. Ms. Higgs brings characters to life so very well. I am excited for the next book to come out (in 2011) and hope to have the opportunity to review it as well.
Momma C’s Thoughts: Although I love the storyline, I found myself pushing through sections as they were a little wordy for me. Of course this very well could be that my time is limited to read and so I value it greatly. I also struggled a little at the beginning with the history surround the Scottish plot but soon had it figured out in my mind. Also understand that this is not an easy-read as there are approx 130 Scottish words used throughout the book. The words are written in italics and a dictionary is provided in the back. Thankfully, many are easily understood though. Accented dialect is also written in conversation so be prepared to read through this. I don’t say this to scare you off because this is a really good book. But…be prepared coming into it.
