When I was a kids we had the choice of Psalty’s the Singing Song Book Kids Bible or Precious Moments Bible. And the only thing that was made these Bibles different were that fact that they had a colorful cover!
Today’s kids have Bibles to pick in about any color or theme desired.
The storybook, handbook, and devo below focuses on Adventure which may be a draw with the boys in your life!
The Adventure Bible covers approximately 50 Bible stories from Creation to the Journeys of Paul. The Bible concludes discussing how the story continues because Jesus is coming back. Each story ends with an “Adventure Discovery” (key point) and “Words of Treasure” (verse). Typical of children storybooks, much liberty has been taken in telling each story. Here is an example from the story of Lazarus.
Like an old scary movie, a mummy walked out of the tomb, its cloth bandages starting to unravel.
The CD’s are the readings of each story word-for-word from the book. Sounds effects and music fill the background of each story. Different voices are used for help the child differentiate between characters. I found the CD’s to be very slow and almost lulling me to sleep. This could be a good thing if you want to use for naptime or bedtime with your children. May be too strung out for typical listening.
Adventure Bible Handbook: A Wild Ride Through the Bible
Written in comic book form, four children travel through the major Bible stories searching for a lost archaeologist. Snippets of the Bible stories are shared along with conversation between the characters. The margins provide additional information about the subject including answer questions, maps, and historical information. To end the book is a list of Bible stories so that the reader can read the actual Scripture. Also included is the Apostle’s Creed, Scripture and Subject, and Image Guide.
I could see this book being a great guide for a parent and late elementary aged son to read along with the Scripture. Just keep in mind that this is not a Bible and always refer to the Bible to make sure the information is correct.
The Adventure Bible, NIV Book of Devotions: 365 Days of Adventure
Divided into 365 one-page devotionals, The Adventure Bible Devo is geared toward 9-12 year olds as well. Every devo includes a title, verse, 4-5 paragraph write up and key point (Words to Treasure – verse, Life/People in Bible Times, Live It!, or Did You Know?). The “adventure” comes in that the readings cover outdoor topics.
