I grew up attending church every time the doors were open. I went to a Christian college and took Old and New Testament survey. We now attend a Bible church and I have been involved in numerous small group studies. I now have a deep desire for personal quiet time. You would think that I would truly know the Bible.
Yeah…not as much as you would think.
The older I get the more I realize I don’t know the Bible. The Bible is so much more than Sunday School stories that I learned as a kid. There is a main theme and everything fits together. The Word of God is so deep, detailed, personal, and intimate that I will never be able to say that I truly know the Bible.
That is probably why I have enjoyed reading the Bible Savvy Series by pastor Jim Nicodem. Think “What’s in the Bible?” for adults and in book form. And you know my love for WITB DVDs!
The Bible Savvy Series consists of four small books the size of pocket Bibles. Here are the descriptions from the publisher.
Epic: The Storyline of the Bible
unveils the single theme that ties all the various parts of scripture together: redemption.
Foundation: The Reliability of the Bible
explains that the Bible is God’s book, not merely man made, and why it can be wholly trusted.
Context: How to Understand the Bible
shows readers how to read the different parts of the Bible as they were meant to be read and how they fit together.
Walk: How to Apply the Bible
helps readers put their greater understanding of the text into practice and how to draw real-life applications from it.
Points that I love about these little jewels:
- Super easy to read. Mr. Nicodem writes like he is talking directly to you. He adds humor and personal situations.
- The Bible is not a clear cut book and depending on your interpretation you may or may not agree. Mr. Nicodem does a good job of briefly explaining the different view points among Christian scholars. In one situation, he specific says “This is not a doctrine of faith that all Christians must agree on.”
- These books are great for someone new to the Bible or someone like me who has grown up in the Faith.
- Each chapter contains a study guide that can be used for a personal study or as a group discussion. They even include “icebreakers.” I have shared these books with my women’s group and hope to use them after we finish the current study.
I have been using these books as my quiet time and am blessed.
What are you using your in personal quiet time right now?
Thank you to Moody Publishers for allowing me to review these helpful books.
