I received The Jesus Book in the mail from Thomas Nelson and had to fight off my children to look at it first. They were drawn to the pictures and immediately wanted me to read it to them. Thumbing through the book, I also found the pictures very inviting. The book is organized in a wonderful why to help a child get to know Jesus as a Personal God.
As a mom of preschool age children, I realized that several of the words used in the short stories were above their comprehension but I am excited to dig into the book deeper as they get older – into elementary school age. The book is laid out in a way that would be perfect for night time devotions – reading either 1 story a night or more if time allows.
Although the book is stated for ages 4-8, I believe that children closer to ages 6 and 7 will be able to grasp the concepts better. My five year old enjoyed listening to the book but I felt much of the vocabulary was not understood.
It was the simplicity of the stories that really drew me to this book. There are Biblical concepts that are hard to explain to a young child. The author of the book laid out the explanations in a way that made hard things look easy. I love the maps and time lines which would compliment a school history lesson.
I believe that this would make a wonderful devotion for a child who is early elementary school age. This book takes the Bible to a deeper level. Because of the simplicity, this book is a suggested supplement to the Bible stories in the ABCJesusLovesMe Curriculum.
Update: This book is no longer in print and is available in Kindle edition only.
