As a child, I was puzzled over the “fruit” of the Spirit. Why fruit? Character education, based on some of the fruit of the Spirit, is the core of the 4 Year Curriculum at ABCJLM. But do you really understand this “fruit” thing?
In the January 2010 issue of Clubhouse JR, Christian Elden does a wonderful job of putting it into terms that preschoolers can understand – and confused Mommies and Daddies.
First things first – the fruit of the Spirit refer to this verse in the Bible
Galatians 5:22-23 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Elder explains what “bearing good fruit” means:
When you really get to know God, you will want to be like Him! And with His help, you can grow to be healthy, strong and beautiful inside. Then you’ll be like a tree covered with bright, yummy fruit! And your fruit – the way you treat others – will make God smile.
Our goal as a parent is to mold our children into men and women who love God and produce beautiful fruit of the Spirit.
Putting it into practice:
On our refrigerator are pieces of paper with the nine fruit of the Spirit listed on them. When we see our children demonstrating – or not demonstrating – the fruit, we bring them to the refrigerator to talk about the choice they made. The kids are so excited when they have just demonstrated a fruit and we remind them that what they did made God smile!
How do you use the Fruits of the Spirit in your home?
