Click to read an update on the God, I Need to Talk to You About… series.
Because of the 4 Year Curriculum’s focus on character education, I was immediately drawn to the titles of these books. I was thankful when Concordia Publishing House allowed me to review a few of them. There are 16 God, I Need to Talk to You books by Dan Carr, covering topics from whining to bad manners.
I had read these books before but Bubs and I sat down again just to make sure that I remembered all of the details before writing the review. I was even more impressed on the second readings.
There are some topics that are hard to explain to a child. The immaturity of a preschooler can not fully grasp the “why’s” of values. Of course there are some kids who just take you for your word. But the kids in this house ask “why”. Why is lying bad? Why is it bad to hit?
My number one love of these books is that they reinforce what we already teach at home. Above that every value is channeled toward God. In simple terms and real life examples, a child can learn how to treat others as Christ would want them to. Scattered throughout the books are Bible verses. Bubs even commented that he didn’t realize that the Bible talked about lying!
Each book starts out “Dear God”. The story line is a child talking to God explaining what they did wrong and asking God forgiveness. It also includes conversations that they had with other people. The only frustration that I have with the books is that in context of the prayer pronouns can get confusing. So, as I read, I just added in words (ie. “you, God” instead of just “you”; “Mom” instead of “you”). I found this helped with clarity of whom we were talking about.
These are very small books; more like a booklet. 5.5 X 4.5 inches. With 16 short pages, these books are pretty short. Because of their size, these books are very inexpensive as far as book prices go. You can pick up all 16 for about $20!
I read that one mom uses these books as part as her child’s timeout. If there is a particular issues that you are struggling with in our home, this book would be a great start to a conversation.
These books are excellent supplements to Bible Time and the character education on the 4 Year Curriculum.

These books sounds wonderful and an answer to a prayer. Disciple is a struggle lately. I found a serious of books at the library on disciple issues but didn't care for them. Talking about the pictures really helped Bubba understand better though. These are going to be added to our library very soon.

I would really like to get them but i'm confused as to how many there actually are because it says there are 24 in the series but then says there are only 16 in the collection.

There are now at least 24 in this series. I do not know whether more have been added in the last few months. At the time of this post, there were just 16. I am sorry for the confusion. I will add a note to this post.
