Living Lights: The Berenstain Bears and the Golden Rule
For Sister Bear’s birthday, she receives a special locket inscribed with the Golden Rule. She doesn’t quite understand what it means, even though Mama Bear explains it. Then an new girl arrives at her school, and she’s faced with a choice: Should she ignore the new girl at school just because her friends do? As she befriends a lonely newcomer, she understands what the Golden Rule looks like in action. The Berenstain Bears and the Golden Rule shows children how choosing to be kind may not always be the easy choice. But it is always the right one.
Teaching a child about the Golden Rule is the 2nd most important thing that you can instill after teaching them to “Love the Lord their God” (Matthew 22:36-40). This book does a pretty good job. Sister learns what the Golden Rule is and then has the opportunity to “live” it with a friend at school.
I have included this book in the 4 Year Curriculum when discussing forgiveness. The Bible story used is Joseph and his brothers. He had to expend the Golden Rule to them when his sinful desire would have been to be mean back.
Definitely worth checking out.
