Little Man struggles to get into his car seat. Oh, it’s not because he can’t. It is because he gets distracted from all of the buttons, gadgets, insects, items on the floor – basically, you name it – on the way to his seat. (Remember my posts about Spirited Children?”) So a few mornings ago, we practiced getting in and out of the van. With the new baby coming in a few weeks, this is a battle that must be conquered
Standing in front of the van, I made him look me in the eyes as I said “go get into your car seat.” Then we practiced doing exactly that. Making sure there was no wondering along the way, we started over every time he digressed. Once that was conquered, I looked him in the eyes and said, “go into the house.” He was not allowed to touch anything other than what was necessary to get him into our home.
Needless to say, this took some time. It truly is amazing what this child can find to touch, turn on, push, or manipulate. But after a long while, he successfully did as was told.
This doesn’t mean that he is successful every time but I have seen a huge improvement!
