If you are a Karen Kingsbury fan, you have been anticipating her brand new book Unlocked. She even had an excerpt of it in her latest Baxter Family series. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity to review it!
But, here I sit unsure of what to write. To be honest, about half way through a typical review book, I am already starting to outline what I want to write in the review. For the first time in my “reviewing” life, I am really not sure what I should say. Even after finishing Unlocked, I am still puzzled.
In overview, Holden Harris is an 18-year-old locked in the world of autism. Only in God’s perfect timing is Holden reintroduced to Ella – his best childhood friend. Together, God uses their lives to change individuals, families, and a school.
Don’t misunderstand me. It isn’t that this book is bad. Exactly the opposite. I have heard it labeled “Karen’s best book so far.” It may very well be. I think what I am struggling over is just rapping my brain around all of it. Kingsbury has chosen to include some hard topics in this book. I believe this book was so emotional for me because each of these topics are ones on my “mission field.” Topics that God has laid on my heart to advocate for in my personal and professional life.
This book is one that needs to be read as you will not look at autism, mommyhood, bullying, friendship, and family the same way. You will be changed.
