What’s in a Name?: Our Out-of-Sync Life

05/12/2011 by Heidi

Although I don’t understand 95% of Shakespeare, I do remember a few lines from his famous plays.  Here is a line said by Juliet in the play Romeo and Juliet:

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”

While I see both sides of this concept, I believe that it is very important when naming things.  With the three website/blogs that I have, I thought and prayed a long time before choosing each name.

The title of this blog is “Our Out-of-Sync Life.”  But what does that mean?  Where did this title come from?  Good question.  Let me share!

At just six days old, Bubs had open heart surgery causing us to take up residency at a children’s hospital for the first month of his life.  Obviously this wasn’t a normal beginning but at 3 months of age, we were told to expect a normal life and to treat him like a normal child. Praise the Lord!

But at18 months, I knew something wasn’t right.  I talked to other moms, and no one could relate.  I explained that he was inconsolable at times and that minor things set him into a tailspin.  I searched the web.  Meltdowns lasted 90 minutes.  Devoured every book possible.  While I learned some “whys” I never learned “how.”  I couldn’t figure out how to help our little boy.

It wasn’t until he was four years old that we finally got help through an Occupational Therapist.  I soaked up every bit of advice that I could trying to learn how to “save” our son.

As I saw great changes in our son, God placed more and more people in my life who were going through the same thing.  Because I found the journey so lonely, I felt lead to launch this blog with a focus on helping families with Sensory Processing Disorder and in day-to-day life as well.

I had a mission, but about a name?  I wanted a name that would imply the message.

First, thinking back to some of the books that I had read, I felt like the title of the book The Out-of-Sync Child summed up Bubs’ situation very well.  He could not properly interpret sensory input. His body was not in harmony with his mind.   He was an out-of-sync child.

Secondly, I thought about life as a Christian family.  How we live our life is not in harmony with the way of the world.  Our focus is on Jesus Christ.  Our life is “out-of-sync” with the world view as we obey the commandment of Deuteronomy 6:7-9 to “impress” God on our children.

Combining both, the blog was named “Our Out-of-Sync Life.”

I once saw a mom rate this blog an “average” mom blog.

Bummer.

But then I read her reasoning for the rating.  She shared that Our Out-of-Sync Life is a blog “written in a causal tone by an average mom who is having a comfortable conversation with friends.”

And that is my prayer.  That when you pull up a blog post that you feel like a conversation between friends.  That you will be encouraged as we learn together to raise godly men and women for Christ.
