Review: Praying the Scriptures for Your Children

05/03/2011 by Heidi

Right now, click on this link and place this book in your Amazon shopping cart.

Trust me.  I am so confident that I can say if you don’t already own the book Praying the Scriptures for Your Children, purchase it right now.  It will rock your prayer life and in turn change the life of the child whom you will pray for.  Use this book if you are a mother, father, grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, Sunday School teacher, the list goes on…

Read the product description (simply because I couldn’t say it any better myself).

Jodie Berndt shows you how to make the Bible a book of prayers that can powerfully influence your children’s lives. You’ll discover how to pray specifically and expectantly for their faith, character, safety, relationships, and future. You’ll gain new, biblical perspectives on God’s purposes for your children. And through the encouragement of the Scriptures and true-life stories, you’ll find out what a huge difference your prayers really make in the lives of those you love most.

Praying the Scriptures for Your Children offers help for mothers who want to get beyond “God bless Johnny” into deeper and more specific needs. It presents scripture-based prayers and prayer principles arranged around ten key life “needs” of children, and includes ideas for using biblical characters to pray for your children.

Oh wow.

That is all I can say.  Well, you know me, I have a little bit more to tell you…

We all know that God tells us in His Word that we are to pray.  But how?  When?  Why – I mean, does prayer really make a difference?

Prayer is communication with God.  What better way to communicate than by using God’s own words, His promises that come straight out of the Bible?

The 20 chapters in this book deal with different prayer topics or areas of concern.  Mini stories help explain each topic.  At the end of the chapter are several Bible verses written in the form of prayers that you can personalize.

Praying scripture is something that is pretty new to me.  Although I was starting to grasp it, this book made it super clear.   Jodie Berndt makes is very easy to take God’s Word and pray for yourself, your family, and those around you.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 says to “Pray without ceasing.”  Berndt encourages you to use different parts of your day to pray for different things in your life.  While folding clothes, pray for the armor of God to be on your children.  As you place clothes in the closet, pray that your child will grow in the knowledge of God.  Pray in the carpool line, in the grocery store, while doing dishes.

Because the Bible isn’t going to be in your hand at all times, Berndt explains the importance of memorizing scripture (click for ideas).  The more verses that you “deposit in your ‘prayer bank’ the more quickly and effectively you can make a withdrawal when the prayer needs arise.”

Please understand, the prayers in this book are not special, magical chants to make sure no bad happens to you or those around you.  The stories told are not promises that everything in your little world will work out perfectly.  God doesn’t always answer yes to each prayer sent up.  Sometimes He says “no.”  Sometimes He say “wait.”

But it is through our conversations with God that we grow.  We learn more about God and we see God’s hand at work in our lives.  Berndt reminds us, “Prayer represents an opportunity for you to partner with God in accomplishing His purposes here on earth.”

Praying the Scripture is powerful.  I encourage you to join me.
