When Bubs was three we started speech. Holy cow, I had no idea the cost for a thirty minute session of speech. (I really wondered why I got a teaching degree for a moment!) On top of that, our speech pathologist wanted to see him several times a week and felt it would take several years to correct his problems. I was pregnant with baby number three at the time and knew there was no way that this was feasible. So I asked her to teach me and I would work with him at home. And she did. We would go to weekly sessions and then he and I worked at home daily. Bubs tested out of speech after six months.
The point of my story…I was way over my head.
When I was asked to review the Super Star Speech program, I was interested because I know that I needed help and wished there had been an at home program for me.
The Super Star Speech materials have been designed by a speech-language-pathologist to assist parents in helping their children achieve developmentally appropriate speech and to provide some of the necessary resources to do speech therapy at home. The focus of these books is the correction of articulation (speech sound) errors.
The instruction book starts out with a test to see what errors the child has. The directions are easy to follow. Then there are pencil-drawn pictures for different sounds showing the sounds in different placements. Each sound has specific instructions along with a detailed word list. Last are games and activities to do with the child.
With my education background and speech experience, I find this program to be super easy to follow. I would have no trouble taking my child through the activities, practice sessions, and tests. The directions are simple and well written. These activities and explanation would have been good to have while I worked with Bubs. This is a book that I will definitely keep for future reference.
Disclaimer: This book is only for articulation. There are many, many speech problem; articulation being only one. Depending on the severity of your child, I would highly suggest that you talk to a professional first before beginning any program.
