Several months ago I mentioned that my mom gave me a 1993 issue of Shining Star magazine. Included in this issue is an excerpt from Jody Capehart’s book – Cherishing and Challenging Your Children. The article called “Making Meaningful Memories”, contains practical tips to create family traditions and memories throughout the year. This is the final month of featured suggestions from this article and Ms. Capehart’s book.
December:
1. Try to divert some of the attention from the “getting” and focus on the “giving.” Talk with your child about “What do you think would be a good thing to give to this person, or to this organization?” Help them being to think as givers. Build on this attitude. Here are a few suggestions:
– Adopt a needy family.
– Angel Tree Program
– Give baskets of food to needy families.
2. Advent Wreath – As you light the candles of your own Advent wreath, read from Scripture and talk about what it means to live joy, peace, and love. This all builds to the climax when you light the final candle to celebrate the birthday of Jesus who is the Light of the World.
3. Have a birthday party for Jesus. You could invite neighborhood children, school friends, etc.
