Review: Psalm 23 & Veggie Town Voyage

02/10/2013 by Heidi

I found the cover illustration of the new book Psalm 23 by Richard Jesse Watson to be intriguing.  Not the image that I would have guessed for a children’s book covering the peaceful Psalm 23.  Reminded me of C.S. Lewis story cover.

The text is simply the words in Psalm 23.  “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want….”  Each page contains one line and a very large illustration containing children, angels, lambs, a lion, and/or a shepherd among various scenery.  Some of the illustrations are abstract making it hard for children to easily grasp the message.

Following the passage, two pages contain the individuals lines with snapshots of the corresponding illustrations along with explanations of the lines and then a prayer of thanks.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

God watches over me like a shepherd watches over his sheep.  He protects me and takes care of all my needs.

Thank you, God, for watching over me!

While Amazon states that this book is for ages four and up, this would not be a book that my children ask to read over and over.  I wish the explanations would have come during the book instead of like an after thought following the Psalm.

Veggietown Voyage (Big Idea Books) is the second book in this review. This three-book collection features the popular Veggie Tale characters.  Lost in Place features Junior as he is taken on a mock Star Trek adventure and learns about fear.  Cool Hand Cuke takes Junior to the farm where he learns what truly makes a person “rich.”  Ben Hurry draws Junior and Laura into a book with a Roman ship and soldiers.  Here Junior learns about patience.

While we love the Veggie Tales videos, the books are not my favorite.  These stories are fairly long and seem to lose the interest of the reader.
