While thinking through this “preparation” series, I pondered a name. There is always the “Getting Ready” title. How about “The Prepping Parent?” (Cheesy, I know!) While “Ready, Set, Go” fits the description of the topics we will cover, I want more, because what we are preparing to do is one of the most important things I will do in life!
So in search for the perfect title, I went to the source of all answers – the Scriptures. Searching for parenting verses, I came back to one of my favorites.
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. ~~Deut 6:4-9
One word stood out to me. Impress – leave an imprint or mark. Webster also uses the words “transfer, transmit.” I love the idea of impressing upon our children the commandments of God. My pastor shared the illustration of biting your hand and leaving teeth marks; leaving an impression.
This series is preparing you to leave an imprint on your child’s heart. It’s assisting you in transferring what God is teaching you on to your child. Our goal is to prepare our hearts and removing any obstacles that would cause this transfer to not impress correctly or deeply.
I think of these last few weeks of summer as the time to get the “stuff” around me organized so that I can devote my attention to my children during the busy school year.
Understand that training has occurred all summer long in our home…but it has been more lax and carefree and fun generated. And this is good! We all need a break. But now it is time to be intentional and seize the moments that God has given me. It is time to impress!
Tomorrow: What am I impressing?
What do you desire to impress on your child this school year?
