A few years ago, a movie ignited fires in marriages around the world.
It displayed to hurting couples that love is a choice and marriage is a
commitment. The movie Fireproof centers around a 40-day challenge called the The Love Dare. A dare for husbands and wives to practically practice unconditional love towards each other. Here is a short video to explain.
Three years later, authors Alex and Stephen Kendrick have furthered this dare to include parents. The Love Dare for Parents follows the same concept. 40 days of practical, Scriptural-driven ideas to help a parent “understand, practice, and communicate Christ-like love to their children.”
Each day’s chapter includes a Scripture verse, a reading passage concerning the topic, a challenge to implement that day, and space to journal. Eight separate appendixes further the teaching.
To begin, the authors encourage you to take a free personalized parenting assessment. It took just a few minutes to take and showed the strengths and weaknesses of specific areas of my parenting. Then the results showed which days of the challenge would focus on the areas. I was surprised by the results and asked my husband to take it for me. Interestingly enough, our scores were only a 2 pt difference.
The authors grabbed my attention right way with this introductory sentence.
Approximately 6,575 days pass between a child’s birth and his or her eighteenth birthday.
Oooo…that is not may days. Every day, that number is getting smaller and I have less time to love on and mold my children. To prepare them to be used by God and to love others as God would love.
Reading through the challenges, I liked how intentional they were. I can see where focusing for 40 days on my children in this way would be very rewarding. The dares reminded me how precious my children are and how much they desperately want and need my unconditional love.
As with all books, there were a couple of small points that I didn’t agree with the authors. Nothing fundamental but still differences of opinions.
While the book is designed to cover 40 days, it could easily be used for an extended amount of time if needed.
The publisher has shared the first challenge – “Day 1” – to allow you to see if this resource would bless your family.
