Today begins a week long series on “Surviving Church with Children.” Ideas to help you return to church, keep your children quiet during church, and how to worship with special needs children. I pray that you will glean practical ideas to help you not just survive church but truly be refreshed each week.
As a mom to littles and the writer of a preschool website, I am always looking for quality books that teach morals and character education. A new series by Kathleen Long Bostrom is attempting to do just that.
Rufus and Ryan are best friends. Ryan shares everything he knows with his special stuffed friend Rufus. And in the newest book to the series, Rufus and Ryan Go to Church!, the reader hears Ryan explain with simple preschool language to his stuffed monkey what happens at a typical small church.
With that said, this book will not apply to every church. Actually, there was very little of this book that my kiddos can relate too. We go to church on Saturday night (vs Sunday as the book mentions) and our kiddos go to children’s church instead of sitting in on “Big Church,” as we like to call it. In the book, the child sits through the entire sing-time and message. It also illustrates pews when our church uses chairs. Lastly, the book mentions snacks and juice after church. Our kiddos receive snacks during children’s church.
A lot of contrast.
But when we visit Grams and Papa’s home, the book is a good representation of their church. So, this book would be perfect for preparing to visit a different church. It can also teach the concepts of same and different. Discuss how your church is the same and how it is different than the example discussed and illustrated in the book. This book makes a great “seek and find” book as Rufus is illustrated on every page. This gives the child something to find as you read the story!
If the author’s name is familiar to you, Ms. Bostrom is the author of the Little Blessings books Who Made the World? and What Is the Bible?
which I suggest on the ABC Jesus Loves Me website.
A third Rufus and Ryan book discussing Easter will be available this Spring.
And guess what?

I wasn't sure where to leave a comment to be eligible to win a copy of the Rufus and Ryan book giveaway. I have been following your blog and also signed my daughter up to receive your daily blog posts as her 4 year old son has SPD. She is encouraged by your posts and longs to have a friend, like you, who understands the daily demands of loving this special little man. I also "liked" you on facebook. I added the satement you suggested also. Thank you for using the experiences God has allowed you to go through to help so many other moms who have benefited from your encouragement.

My name is Diana Kimes and I follow you on Pinterest. Like ALL of your pages on FB! You are the best and I love what you are helping me do with preschool and helping my daughter not only learn academics, but about God as well. Just wanted to comment on this to let you know I've followed you and Liked your pages so we can be entered for a chance to win a copy of Rufus and Ryan. π Would be great for us because the devil is keeping me out of church because my daughter is backward and cries when she goes to class so she when we do go she stays up in the "Big Church" with me and I feel like everyone else frowns on that, not that they do. I know it's the devil. Thanks so much for everything you do! π Going to share the giveaway with others. π
