The almanac is predicting a very unfriendly winter. Boo! After missing 13 days of school last year, I shutter to think what this will mean for the coming three months. But this threat makes today’s Thanks-Giveaway that much more exciting. A free 3 month Netflix subscription. The opportunity to have commercial-free, family-friendly entertainment (if you choose) when the weather makes it impossible to get outside.
Most of you know that we watch very little TV and spend little time on battery-operated boxes. But I am learning there is a place in our “impressing” for electronics. Plus, there is some great, God-honoring options out there.
Of course you know my love for the What’s in the Bible? DVDs. But, did you know that What’s in the Bible? was created by Phil Vischer, who developed the most popular faith-based children’s entertainment brand VeggieTales? One and the same!
While Phil has closed the “window” on Veggie Tales (he still voices some of the characters), DreamWorks has picked up where he left off and has created new videos and a brand new Netflix-exclusive VeggieTales series entitled “In the House!”
For the first time in 21 years, Bob, Larry, and the Veggie crew venture off the countertop for exciting new adventures.
Our family was excited to see the new series so we quickly grabbed the beanbags and quilts (remember how I said it was going to be an unfriendly winter?) to see what the new VeggieTales had in store!
First of all, change.
Almost immediately Sweet Pea said, “Bob and Larry look different.” Bubs came in a few minutes later and stated the same thing. The characters now have color to their eyes. While Bob and Larry are still voiced by Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki, other key characters have a different vocal. Also there is more texture to each character. Just take a little to get used to.
Next, the beloved theme song has been retired. Kind of sad.
Third, instead of taking place in the kitchen, most of the scenes reside at Larry and Bob’s house or Pa Grape’s store. Some minor characters have received big promotions. Laura Carrot and Petunia will quickly become household names in this new series. On the flip side, some characters got the ax. Ugh!
But change isn’t always bad. It’s just different.
VeggieTales in the House still contains the same witty humor and quirky, funny songs that made the series famous. The content is completely family friendly and teaches morals and Biblical values. A key Bible verse is shared in each episode.
But…
I am always saddened when a godly mission inches toward the secular genre. If you have heard Phil Vischer’s testimony, you know that he set out with Veggie Tales to teach kids the Bible. But somewhere between the Veggie Tales garden gloves and Bob and Larry toolbox, Phil lost his original vision. And I couldn’t agree more. Somewhere between the peak of Big Ideas Entertainment and Phil leaving, the vision of teaching the Bible turned into a goal of teaching good morals. Long gone are the days of Dave and the Giant Pickle
and Rack, Shack & Benny. Thus the creation of What’s in the Bible?.
If you sit down to view VeggieTales in the House to learn about the Bible, you will be sorely disappointed. A Bible verse is thrown into most episodes but that is about it.
If your goal is to provide your family with wholesome, fun entertainment with a moral lesson, then you will be happy. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with VeggieTales in the House if you accept it for what it is. And frankly, our kids really enjoyed the shows.
But, that is a choice that you will have to make for yourself.
As stated, VeggieTales in the House is only available on Netflix. Did I hear you mutter that you don’t have Netflix???? Have no fear! I have a 3-month subscription to giveaway. Just in time for the unfriendly winter months! And if you already have a subscription, this giftcard can be applied directly to your account! Woo-hoo!

Debra C. My son and I were very excited to see Veggie Tales In The House on our Netflix this week. The kids have already watched almost all the episodes. I will say that I made sure to watch the first one with my son, just to make sure they hadn't changed too much. I was glad to see that bible verses were still in there. I was worried that they would ditch the bible altogether. Some other favorites in our house: Jake and the Neverland Pirates and Littlest Pet Shop (I think she likes it just because of the animals).
