Do Your Understand Dyslexia: Dyslexia Bible Review

12/03/2024 by Heidi

Most likely you have heard about a learning disability called dyslexia. Many people associate it with reversing letters. But 2 years ago, I learned that about dyslexia on a personal level when after 10 years of searching for the cause, my daughter was given the dyslexia diagnosis finally providing a path to help.

You may remember in my post “How Visual Perception Would Have Helped Her,” my daughters struggles with reading. Things began falling apart for Sweet Pea in the 2nd grade. Her reading level decreased, her test scores dropped, and her spelling was atrocious. But she continued to be at the top of her class in other academic areas. How could this be?

While visual perception therapy realigned her eyes and brain, dyslexia continues to plague her reading and comprehension skills.

What is Dyslexia?

For those who don’t know much about Dyslexia, let me provide some brief info.

“Dyslexia is the term used when people have trouble learning to read, even though they’re smart enough and want to learn.” …“Research has shown that dyslexia happens because of a difference in the way the brain processes information.”1

“Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. Characteristic features of dyslexia are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed. Dyslexia occurs across the range of intellectual abilities. Co-occurring difficulties may be seen in aspects of language, motor co-ordination, mental calculation, concentration and personal organization, but these are not, by themselves, markers of dyslexia.” 2

“Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty which primarily affects reading and writing skills. However, it does not only affect these skills. Dyslexia is actually about information processing. Dyslexic people may have difficulty processing and remembering information they see and hear, which can affect learning and the acquisition of literacy skills. Dyslexia can also impact on other areas such as organizational skills. It is important to remember that there are positives to thinking differently. Many dyslexic people show strengths in areas such as reasoning and in visual and creative fields.” 3

Grace Bible for Kids – Dyslexia Friendly

As science has advanced, so have tools to help people with dyslexia. Entire reading programs have been created to help these children successfully read. Tools like speech-to-text and colored overlays can assist.

To my excitement, Holman Bible Publishers has partnered with 2K/DENMARK and Cambridge University to design the first ever Bible specifically for kiddos with dyslexia and other reading challenges. Think about it…being able to more easily read the Bible on your own using academically tested typeface, layout, and design principles to provide distinct letter forms and added space between letters, words, lines, and paragraphs. Also included are special-colored page overlays created by Cambridge University’s research department to further enhance visual processing. Learn more at CSBGraceBibles.com

My Notes: While some children find the colored overlays helpful, my daughter has not benefited from them. Personally, I find the 11-point dyslexia-friendly font much easier to read, as the letters are more spaced out. However, one downside is that the paper is very thin, causing the print on the reverse side to show through. My daughter found this quite distracting. On a positive note, the 40 study helps and maps were a favorite. They provide valuable support for understanding the Bible.

Will the dyslexia friendly Grace Bible for Kids help a child with dyslexia read God’s Word? I’m not sure, but if it does, praise be to God! Order a copy today.

Sidenote: If you believe your child is struggling with visual perception delays or dyslexia, it’s important to consult a specialist. Therapy plays a crucial role in their success.
