Have you ever felt overwhelmed by everything you need to teach your child before they leave the nest? Bible stories, memory verses, work ethic, character training, academics – it can feel like an endless list. I completely relate to this question that was asked in our ABCJesusLovesMe Facebook Group.
Which is more important…the Bible story or the memory verse? With so much to cover, it can feel like there’s no way to fit both in.
When I think about it, it’s like choosing between bread and water. Both are essential, each in their own way. The Bible instructs us to teach our children the Scriptures (Deuteronomy 6:5-9) and to “hide” God’s Word in our hearts so we can guard against sin (Psalm 119:11). So, how do we make time for both as busy moms or teachers?

Understanding the Role of Bible Stories and Memory Verses
Bible stories help children understand how real people trusted God and handled life’s challenges, giving us a deeper glimpse of who God is and His character. Memory verses, on the other hand, are powerful snapshots of truth—specific promises and principles that guide us through daily life. It’s like using both binoculars and a microscope; you need the broad perspective and context that Bible stories offer and the focused insights from memory verses to create a complete picture. They work hand-in-hand and complement each other beautifully.

How to Get Started
If you haven’t started teaching Bible stories or memory verses yet, don’t worry—there are simple ways to begin.
As Melanie and I discussed on the podcast, start by reading from a quality children’s Bible. While there are so many options out there, I’ve put together a list of my favorite children’s Bibles along with tips for choosing the best Bible for your child. The ABCJesusLovesMe Preschool and Bible Curricula also offer weekly Bible stories, memory verses, and activities to support learning. For more ideas on bringing these stories to life, check out the article How to Teach Bible Stories to Children. And as the quote says above, it’s okay not to have all of the answers. Learn alongside your child. I do.
In true transparency, I wish I had been more consistent in teaching memory verses to my kids during their preschool years. Children at this age are like sponges, absorbing everything. But the good news is that it’s never too late to start memorizing Scripture, whether your child is 2 or 10—or even if you’re beginning at 30 or 60!

To help, I’ve created some resources for you: Scripture Memorization Tools, Memory Verse Song Videos with Motions, Bible Song Videos. When my kids were young, I printed the Memory Verse Cards, laminated with clear contact paper, and placed on a binder ring for us to cover while the car. You can also watch the video How to Teach a Child Bible Verses for practical tips to make the process enjoyable for both of you.
The beauty of teaching Bible stories and memory verses is that together, they lay a strong foundation for your child’s spiritual growth. It takes time and effort, but the seeds you plant now will bear fruit for a lifetime. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection—just take one step at a time and trust that God will handle the rest!
What is your child’s favorite Bible story and memory verse? I’d love to hear.
