The day a child says “yes” to Jesus is worth celebrating. I mean…if heaven rejoices over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:10), we should celebrate too. Then just like we celebrate birthdays each year, create the tradition of helping the child remember their spiritual birthday and what God has done in their life.
But then comes the question… how do you celebrate a spiritual birthday in a meaningful way?

Why a Salvation Birthday Matters
Before we even get into the “how,” let’s talk about the why. Because salvation really is worth celebrating. This is the day your child begins their personal relationship with Jesus. The day their life is forever changed. And as moms, we want to mark moments that matter—and this one matters deeply.
Throughout Scripture, we see the importance of remembering what God has done. Over and over again: remember, don’t forget. So it’s not silly or futile to celebrate this—it’s actually a beautiful way to say, “God, what You did here matters.”

Keeping it Simple and God-Focused
Here’s the part that might be a relief: This doesn’t need to be big. No elaborate party. No pressure. No Pinterest stress. In fact, the more simple and focused it is, the more meaningful it often becomes. Here are some ideas…
- Gather around the table with a favorite dessert—cake, brownies, ice cream, whatever your family loves. Light a candle, pause together, and thank God for what He’s done.
- Take time to tell (or retell) the child’s salvation story. Talk about what happened, what they said, what you noticed in their heart at the time. Kids love hearing their story—and if they were young and don’t remember, you’re helping build that memory for them.
- This is also a beautiful time to look for spiritual growth and say it out loud. Share the ways you’ve seen God working in their life:
“I’ve noticed you being more patient lately when…”
“I love how you’re asking questions about God…”
“I see kindness growing in you when you…”
And gently point it back to Him: “…that’s God working in your heart.” - You can also take a few minutes to pray over your child—praying for wisdom, courage, and continued growth in their faith. Asking them what they’ve learned about Jesus this year can lead to really special conversations.
- If you’d like to include a gift, keep it simple and meaningful—something that encourages their relationship with Jesus. A Bible, a devotional, a journal, or even a handwritten letter sharing what you see God doing in their life can become something they treasure for years. I’ve created a list of salvation celebration ideas on the ABCJesusLovesMe website.
A Gentle Reminder
Remember, this doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. You’re not trying to create a perfect moment—you’re creating a remembered one.
A moment where your child knows: “This is the date I chose Jesus. And it matters.”
Because salvation isn’t the finish line—it’s the beginning of a lifelong walk with Him. And that is always, always worth celebrating.
