When it came county fair time for Bubs, we had to decide what he would enter for a 4-H project. For some reason, I kept reminiscing about melted Styrofoam cups. I have this memory of my Great-Grandma placing styrofoam cups in the oven to create snowmen. After doing the project, I realize my memory has failed me. Now, I am wondering if she made pilgrim hats instead.

Nevertheless, this is the project that Bubs and I came up with. Melting two Styrofoam cups to form a head and hat. Aren’t they cute??
Directions:
Place a few Styrofoam cups upside down on a cookie sheet in a 250-300 degree oven. Watch careful because the cups will start to melt down after a few minutes. If you want to do any molding, you will have to do it in the oven while the cups are exposed to the heat. (Obviously, this is not something that you would have a preschooler do.) Almost immediately after taking the cups out of the heat, they will no longer be pliable.
When you get the size and height that you want, paint and decorate to look like people. Add googly eyes, paint the hat, at yarn for hair, cut ribbon for clothing, shape pipe cleaner for mouths. We ended up hot-gluing items together; again, not an activity for a preschooler to do.
This was a fun project for Bubs and the other kiddos enjoyed watching as well.
BTW – Bubs got a blue ribbon on this project!

Very cute! Great way to reuse materials too! I'm not one to throw away a lot! LOL I have a drawer of clean containers (plastic, paper and styrofoam) for the kids to use for crafts. Fun stuff!
