If you are new to this blog, welcome! We are happy to have you join us. This fall you are going to be seeing some changes. I am going to be adding more Bible and book craft ideas along with Letter of the Week ideas. You will continue to learn about what is new on the ABCJLM website as well as get answers to your questions. Here is the first Letter of the Week idea.
Aa Activity and Coloring Poster: Click to print: Aa Poster
Ants:– Paint “ants” on the Aa Poster – using an ink pad, ink one finger and paint three fingerprints in a row. Add antlers, six legs, and a face to make the fingerprints look like ants.
Acorns:– Glue acorn”hats” on the Aa Poster. Remember that the word “acorn” represented the “long vowel” sound of the letter “a.” You may not want to introduce this sound with younger children.
Aluminum Foil:– Glue pieces of aluminum foil onto the Aa Poster.
– Although the word “aluminum” starts with an “a”, this word begins with schwa (represented by an upside down “e” symbol in phonetic transcription). Yet another sound the letter “a” can make.
Animals the Ark:– Begin by painting the letters brown to represent the ark. Then add animals stickers.
– Glue animal crackers on the Aa Poster.
Apples:– Paint the poster with apple stamps or stickers.
– Use apples to do apple painting. Cut the apple in half and dip it into paint.
– Cut out the letters for scissors practice.
Aquarium:– Paint the Aa Poster blue and add fish that you would find at an aquarium. Visit an aquarium or go to a local place (library or office) that as a large aquarium.
– Although the word “aquarium” starts with an “a”, this word begins with schwa (represented by an upside down “e” symbol in phonetic transcription). Yet another sound the letter “a” can make.
Playdough art:– Role the playdough into ropes and lay on the Aa Poster to create the letters
– Create items out of playdough that start with the letter A – apple, alligator, angel, etc. (Idea from Storytime and More)
– Have the child cut out small squares of paper and glue on the Aa Poster – click here for an example picture (Idea from Storytime and More)
Computer Activities: Starfall Aa Computer Activity
Books:
My “A” Book – by Jane Belk Moncure – Be sure to use the phonetic sound of the letter and not the letter name when reading the book. When we come to a letter, I have my child read the phonetic sound of each letter.
