One of the great ways for preschoolers to learn their letters and phonetic sounds is by doing Letter Art. Each weekly Lesson Plan at ABCJLM includes a link to Letter of the Week ideas as well as Letter Posters.
Two weeks ago, W was Letter of the Week. After printing off the Letter W Poster, I sat down with the kids and brainstormed words that start with /w/. They came up with great ones. Then we talked about how we could decorate the W Poster to demonstrate that word.
wiggly – use a piece of string to paint wiggly lines
words – cut out words from the newspaper and glue them onto the W
worm – hole punch holes and weave a brown yarn through as a worm
wig – glue pieces of yarn to look like a wig
woolly – glue cotton balls on the W
water – paint the W blue and add fish and ocean stickers
watercolor – paint with any watercolor
watermelon – paint with red and green, with black dots for seeds
While the kids were having fun coming up with these ideas, they were learning the Letter W.
Bubs was frustrated with his Poster. It didn’t turn out the way that he wanted. Sometimes crafts are that way!
Sweet Pea did a great job staying in the lines with her paintbrush.
Little Man and I did the wig. He was so proud of himself.
You can find all of the Letter Poster and Letter of the Week ideas at ABCJLM. These are excellent activities to do to learn letters and phonetic sounds but also to work on fine motor skills and sensory input!
