If you have grown up in the church, the Christmas story may feel like second nature. You know the young virgin giving birth to the Savior in a stable, wrapping Him in swaddling clothes, and placing Him in a manger. You’ve sung the songs, and you can recite the Bible verses celebrating this incredible news.
But have you ever thought about how this story sounds to someone hearing it for the first time? The classic The Best Christmas Pageant Ever gives us a glimpse.

As a child, I watched the 1983 version about six misfit kids who took over the town’s Christmas pageant. They smoked in bathrooms, stole from the offering plate, and bullied others, yet somehow managed to teach the true meaning of Christmas.
When I heard that The Chosen team was remaking this classic, I was hesitant. Would they do it justice? Would I be disappointed?
Director Dallas Jenkins and his team exceeded my expectations. The new Best Christmas Pageant Ever is filled with strong performances, laugh-out-loud moments, and heartwarming scenes. It moved me to tears, reminding me to appreciate the birth of Jesus with fresh eyes. Watching the six unruly children, who didn’t feel worthy, experience the story was powerful. I wanted to rewatch it immediately.
Normally, I’d recommend a movie based on your interests, but this time I’m telling everyone: go see this movie. Grab your family and friends. Get your tickets for the theaters starting Friday, November 8th. It’s that good—truly a must-see.
This film is sure to become a Franz family tradition, beautifully reminding us of the priceless gift of Jesus at Christmas.
Note: Since I focus on preschoolers, I should mention that I wouldn’t personally take younger children to this PG-rated movie. Not because of inappropriate content, but because it’s more suited for elementary-age kids and older. If you have both young and older children, grab a babysitter or let the little ones have a special date while you enjoy the movie with the older ones.
