I can not tell you how much reading this book is out of character for me. I don’t like anything dealing with murder. Although I like mystery, I read (and watch for that matter) almost none. But when Waterbrook approached me about reviewing the brand new book Forget Me Not: A Novel (Crossroads Crisis Center) by Vicki Hinze, I did the unexpected. Honestly, I deleted the email. Then I went back and responded with a resounding “yes”. I couldn’t wait for the book to arrive.
Let me show you why:
Crossroads Crisis Center owner Benjamin Brandt was a content man—in his faith, his work, and his family. Then in a flash, everything he loved was snatched away. His wife and son were murdered, and grief-stricken Ben lost faith. Determination to find their killers keeps him going, but after three years of dead ends and torment, his hope is dying too. Why had he survived? He’d failed to protect his family.
Now, a mysterious woman appears at Crossroads seeking answers and help—a victim who eerily resembles Ben’s deceased wife, Susan. A woman robbed of her identity, her life, of everything except her faith—and Susan’s necklace.
The connections between the two women mount, exceeding coincidence, and to keep the truth hidden, someone is willing to kill. Finding out who and why turns Ben and the mystery woman’s situation from dangerous to deadly. Their only hope for survival is to work together, trust each other, and face whatever they discover head on, no matter how painful. But will that be enough to save their lives and heal their tattered hearts?
Intrigued? You should be.
This is a book that I did not want to put down. If it hadn’t have been for the laundry, meals to fix, and diapers to change, I would have read the book in one setting. Suspense filled ever page. It is one of those books that is pretty confusing at the beginning. So many unknowns. But with each turn, the author slowly reveals information. There were times that I was solely confused but as I kept reading, I would understand more and more. It isn’t until the very last few pages that the story is totally unwrapped. I seriously want to know how an author can keep all it straight! I will say that there are murders and relatively gross stuff talked about. But for me, things were shielded pretty well (that is saying quite a lot).
Forget Me Not is a Christian novel. Here is a quote from Vicki Hinze on why she wrote the book:
Even when we forget who we are, at core level we remember whose we are.
This is the jest of the book. Understanding that no matter what we do…what we say…where we go…God has not moved. God has not changed His mind about us. We are loved with an everlasting love. Yes, I encourage you to jump in with both feet and learn with the characters what true faith really is.
Thank you to Waterbrook for giving me the opportunity to review this book. It was a privilege.

I love to read a good mystery. May have to check this one out. Better make sure I don't have anything pressing to do since I have trouble leaving a good book to do housework!!!
