Toy Causing Disobedience

01/20/2011 by Heidi

Little Man struggles to come immediately when called.  He also doesn’t like to have his playtime disrupted.  Taking time to go potty is one of those things that royally frustrates him.  So, when he is called to come and go potty while he is playing – look out.

While reading Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood: Practical Parenting from Birth to Six Years, I came across the idea of taking whatever toy is being played with at the time that he disobeys.  Why didn’t I think of that myself???

So a few days ago, I asked him to come to me.  It was a situation that I couldn’t give him a choice but needed to give a command.  He ignored me and kept playing.  I went to him and said, “You need to go potty and you need to go right now.”  He threw a fit not wanting to go.  After a successful bathroom visit, I quietly went to the toys he was playing with, picked them up, and added them to the collection on the shelf.  Boy did I hit a nerve!  I knew that I had found a successful discipline measure!

This has also worked with the other kiddos.  Bubs was having trouble getting ready for school.  A toy was just a little too much fun.  So, he had to bring the toy to me and it was added to the shelf.

Amazing!

GREAT suggestion! My almost 6-year-old son has some problems separating from TV or video games when he needs to do something else even with repeating warnings. I'll have to try this one out by shutting off the TV and taking the remote and DSi!
