There are many books available using the Veggie Tales characters. While my kids enjoy them, they aren’t my just okay but not my favorite. But since the values are good, I oblige and read the books to our kiddos. Princesses, Pirates, and Cowboys is the newest addition. This book contains three separate stories. Princess Petunia’s Sweet Apple Pie is the first story explaining the Golden Rule. Who Wants to Be a Pirate? is the story of Larry who is tired of being himself. He dreams of doing more with his life. But he realizes that being himself really isn’t so bad. To the end the book is The Fairest Town in the West. Sheriff Bob has to keep peace in the town.
The Berenstain Bears Treat Others Kindly contains three stories. The Forgiving Tree centers around a birthday party and a new bike that gets borrowed and wrecked. Gossip Gang demonstrates the dangers of gossiping. Show Some Respect shows everyone struggling with respect to their elders.
Berenstain Bears Good Deed Scouts to the Rescue also contains three stories. Sadly, Kitten Rescue shows Papa Bear as the one lacking intelligence. Neighbor in Need shows the Bear Scouts helping a neighbor with chores. In The Little Lost Cub the Good Deed Scouts help a lost cub and his mommy reunite.
The Berenstain Bears Get Involved is a single story about the Bear family getting involved during a flood to help out the community.
As I have found with several of the new Berenstain Bear books, the plots begin really good but seem to fizzle to a disappointing end. Secondly, Bible verses are thrown into the plots instead of being part of the plots. I was really excited about the Show Some Respect story but was frustrated to see how the story turned a different corner than I expected.
You can’t go wrong with any of these stories because the values are good. But sadly, none of these stories will last the test of time.
