Good, Clean Entertainment: Sue Thomas F.B.Eye

11/14/2013 by Heidi

My parents love to watch Hallmark movies.  Yes, the story lines consist of about four different plots and the acting leaves a little bit desired.  But do you know the draw that my parents and millions of other American’s have?  Almost every Hallmark movie is clean and family-friendly.

And for our family that is a huge deal.

I was excited when I was asked to review an original PAX network TV show called Sue Thomas:  F.B.Eye.  I was promised that it was “one of those shows that is great to enjoy with older kids because it has a fun, compelling storyline while remaining clean and family-friendly.”

As we are quickly saying goodbye to the Baby Einstein period of life and looking for deeper plots, I was interested.

Because this show is geared toward older children and adults, instead of watching with my own kiddos, I took the videos home to share with my parents and to get their thoughts.

“Inspired by the remarkable true story, this critically acclaimed family favorite stars Deanne Bray as a profoundly deaf woman whose unique lip reading ability lands her on the F.B.I.’s elite surveillance team! …  Tackling tough cases while catching the eye of handsome Agent Jack Hudson, Sue and her hearing dog Levi are suddenly ‘G-men’ on the adventure of a lifetime!”
56 episodes were created surrounding this plot which ran from 2002-2005 on PAX and now is syndicated on select channels and is available on DVD.
I have only viewed a few of these episodes but here are my thoughts.
  1. Each episode was entertaining and I enjoyed watching them.
  2. I would rate the acting, plot, and production at the level of a “good” Hallmark movie.
  3. The producer did a wonderful job of helping the viewer understand a little better what it is like to be deaf.  At times the sound goes completely out on the show to help the viewer understanding what the character of Sue is experiencing.  Very insightful.
  4. The story isn’t always told in order thus requiring you to wait and see what the character means or is referring to.
  5. There are some funny lines.  I laughed more than once per episode.
  6. God is mentioned and referred to periodically and Christian values are honored.
  7. Because the plot covers FBI-type cases, these stories are geared toward upper-elementary-aged children and older.
  8. I love the premise that “you are bigger than your limitations.
  9. Deanne Bray, who plays Sue Thomas, was born deaf.  Sometimes it is a little hard to understand what she says but after a couple of episodes, I was able to understand her pretty well.
  10. My parents were excited when I left the DVD’s with them to view.  They have been watching one a night and have looked forward to each.

My hubby and I caught this show one random day being aired on TV. It was awesome! I couldn't stop watching it. It is sure to be that we add to our collection for our kiddos as they grow up and want to watch more "grown up" shows.
