The Promise is one of the newest videos portraying the birth of Jesus. But unlike other options available, this video is a quality 3-D animated musical with Broadway quality singing. Based upon the Gospel of Luke, the characters tell the story of Christmas in both words and songs.
My favorite part of The Promise is how the relationships between Mary, Joseph, and family members are portrayed. Watching the story unfold gave life to the Bible characters. Suddenly Mary and Joseph were no longer flat characters but real people with feelings and emotions toward baby Jesus and each other.
From my layman’s perspective, the 3-D animation is very well done. The scenes are beautiful and at times I forgot I was looking at a computerized background. To be super picky, it took me a little bit to get used to the way the artists chose to draw the characters. Many were very tall and skinny with long noses. Periodically the viewer would be introduced to a character who was round and had a pug nose. The extreme change took me off guard sometimes.
As we watched the video as a family the kids asked me why the characters kept singing. I explained that the film is a musical which means that the story is told through both song and spoken words. Even then, it seemed there were more songs than conversation. This didn’t seem to bother our kids but was surprising for a child-driven movie. Secondly, the songs are more Broadway style than the childlike sing-song of what we are used to in the popular What’s in the Bible? or Boz DVD’s. Because the lyrics aren’t rhyming and catchy, our kiddos probably won’t be walking around singing the songs.
With a strong music background, I was skeptical of the musicality of this video. I was so thankful to hear the solid vocal quality of the actors. There are truly some goose-bump harmonies and notes elegantly given by the vocalist. (And those of you who know me realize what a big deal it is for me to say this!)
I can see this video being pulled out each December and watched year after year. A new tradition of watching The Promise together.
