Why the Remodel?
12 years ago I was the mom of two preschoolers. After open heart surgery, Bubs was in therapy three times a week for Sensory Processing Disorder, ADHD, Language Processing Disorder, and Executive Function Disorder. I felt the overwhelming burden to prepare him for kindergarten.
Using my education background and research, I created a curriculum that I could use at home with him. Knowing that we weren’t the only family with a child with special needs, my husband encouraged me to make the curriculum available online (the birth of ABCJesusLovesMe.com).
A lot has changed in those 12 years. I have grown in working with my children and observing experienced teachers. And, science has learned more about the learning process. While the ABCJLM Curricula are continually evolving, I knew it was time for a major overhaul in the 3 Year Curriculum to make it the best curriculum it could be for children in the 36-48 month range.
New Format
Copying the beloved layout of the 1 and 2 Year Curricula – 2nd Editions, the new format makes the Lesson Plans easier to read and follow. Many of you have told me that you are more successful with the simplicity of the new format! The Items Needed section is listed in columns to quickly gather supplies. The objective list and Daily Schedule have been combined for simplicity.
New Activities and Ordering
Part of the remodeling includes reordering the objectives and adding new activities for better understanding for the child (and the adult). Now each week includes one shape or one color instead of multiples each week. The activities include more play and hand’s on fun. The letters and numbers are introduced through themes, play, and crafts to emphasize phonetic sounds and 1:1 correspondence. With these new ideas, children spend more time in play so they don’t even realize they are learning.
Phonemic Awareness, Pre-Reading, and Vocabulary
The education world is recognizing the strong correlation between children’s exposure to Nursery Rhymes, poems, and rhyming words, and a child’s reading ability. Because of this, phonemic awareness and rhyming is a large part of the 3 Year Curriculum. To aid in vocabulary, weekly themes are now included to open the child’s world to new experiences. Vocabulary is also pulled from the literacy gold found in the Books of the Week.
Teaching Tips
Whether you are teaching a child in your home or in a classroom, the 3 Year Curriculum now contains additional teaching tips to explain why activities are important and to help you implement the ideas. And because not all activities are conducive to both a classroom and home setting, notes have been made in the Lesson Plans to share ideas for both learning atmospheres.
Bible
The Bible learning that you have come to love continues to be strong in the 3 Year Curriculum with the addition of Interactive Bible Stories, new activities, and updated worksheets.
