“Yahweh allows the stuff of Earth to be lacking in its ability to fulfill us so that we have no choice but to look to Him for our ultimate satisfaction.” Priscilla Shirer, Elijah

If you’re like me, you don’t enjoy feeling like something is missing. We want to fill the empty places in our lives, to build purpose and meaning so we don’t have to sit in the discomfort. Here are some ways I see myself—and other mommas—trying to fill the void:
- through our children
- scrolling through social media
- binge-watching TV shows
- turning to food or wine
- finding identity in work or busyness
- overcommitting to church volunteering
The enemy whispers that if we just focus on these things or numb out, we’ll find purpose. Or, if we work hard enough, we’ll feel whole. But here’s the truth: Children grow up and move on. Social media gets messy and leaves us empty. TV series end. The comfort from food or wine is fleeting and leads to bigger issues. Busyness is mentally and physically exhausting. Work and even volunteering at church, while good, don’t truly satisfy.
God’s Design for Satisfaction
Why do these things fail us? Because God—by His design—is the only one who can truly satisfy us. Everything else will fall short. It might seem like it’s working for a while, but eventually, it fails. And that is a gift! Why? Because as these things fail us, we’re brought to a place where we have no choice but to look to God for true fulfillment. We can finally be at peace.

Letting Go of Earthly Fillers for True Fulfillment
I’ve walked through seasons where I tried to control everything on my own. I attempted to parent in my own strength and leaned only on my knowledge of Scripture instead of truly depending on God for each breath. Eventually, things fell apart. It wasn’t until I hit rock bottom that I realized the only option left was to completely lean on Him. That hard place turned out to be exactly what I needed to experience His grace and strength like never before. My life was completely changed.
What about you? Where are you seeking fulfillment right now? The answer is straightforward: It’s either in God, or it’s in something else. While letting go and trusting God can feel scary at first, the freedom that comes with it will transform your life. If you’d like to talk about this, I’d love to connect through email or LiveChat.
