However, I believe that Halloween can provide an opportunity to express God’s love, especially to your children or students. You may be familiar with the idea of explaining the Gospel while carving a pumpkin. However, if you’ve ever attempted this, you’ve probably discovered that knowing what to say can be a bit daunting. Additionally, tailoring your message to suit different age groups can be quite challenging.

But My Child Doesn’t Like the Feeling of Pumpkin Guts
The aversion to the texture and sensation of pumpkin pulp is felt by both children and adults. During my son’s 11 years of therapy, I came to recognize the significance of not enabling children in such situations. Rather than merely glossing over or offering excuses for their aversions, we should concentrate on providing safe opportunities for them. This approach allows children to develop a positive connection with their senses and understand that engaging in new experiences, such as pumpkin carving, can be both safe and rewarding.
Slow and Steady Wins the Race
Start by using one finger to touch. Gradually increase the level of involvement. Additionally, having a container of warm water and a towel readily available for the child allows them to rinse off the slimy residue before it hardens, making the experience more comfortable. Invite friends to participate, as it can be very helpful for anxious children to see other kids be successful in the sensory environment.
Acknowledge the Child’s Fears
Name the emotion the child is feeling but remind the child that “a feeling is just a feeling – it isn’t in charge of you.” Have fun with the slimy feeling and share some giggles about how it feels. Helping the child tie the event to the Gospel message of Jesus can also alleviate their apprehensions.
If an extreme defensiveness continues or if have further concern, talk to a pediatrician or schedule an Occupational Therapy evaluation. Even if your child doesn’t qualify for therapy, a quality therapist can give you activities to work on at home. Early intervention is crucial.
