One of the perks of my ABCJLM hobby is that I get to review books, CD’s, etc that companies have to offer. I love this opportunity but I also take it very seriously. I realize that by putting my “stamp of approval” on something, it better be good! While most of the time, I review children and parenting items, sometimes I get the chance to read Mommy stuff. The things that I call “Mommy Just-For-Fun” – not a have-to but a privilege. Items for those times that you just want to relax.
Deep Harbor is the lastest of two book in my “Mommy Just-For-Fun” review list. This is the second of three books in the Northern Lights Series. Author Lisa Tawn Bergren is also the author of the popular children’s books – God Gave Us… This book is a great read and one that I encourage you to pick up. Read more about my review of this book on our sister site – Interrupted Expectations.
The second book reviewed didn’t go as well. Yesterday’s Promise by Linda Lee Chaikin was a book that I couldn’t get into. Honestly, I didn’t finish it. Because this book is the second in a series, I struggled with the many character names and the plot. As a busy mom of three, I am picky about what I use my free time for. This book just didn’t do it for me.
As I have stated many times, all of my reviews will be honest. Each company that asked me to review something wants my honest opinion. Thus I can not recommend this book.
Here is an overview:
Rogan Chantry faces danger from tribesmen, ruthless politicians, and his own family as he searches for gold in South Africa. In England, his beloved Evy is injured by a mysterious assailant. The greed and intrigue surrounding the diamond mines could very well drive them irrevocably apart.
But….In Chaikin’s defense, this book has received wonderful reviews on Amazon. I really feel like I am not in the right time in my life to enjoy this book. (I really don’t like to think during my freetime!) I also believe it would have helped to start on the first book – Tomorrow’s Treasures. So if you enjoy christian novels set in the late 1800’s in South Africa with an added touch of mystery, this might very well be the book for you.
